How Much Does an LED Screen Cost? A Realistic Breakdown

What an LED screen really costs, broken down by component, with typical UK ranges, the assumptions behind them, and the parts a panel quote leaves out.

The honest answer to "how much does an LED screen cost" is that nobody can tell you without knowing four things: the pixel pitch, the physical size, whether it goes indoors or out, and whether it will ever move. Change any one of those and the number changes by thousands.

What this guide can do is show you where the money actually goes, give you ranges you can budget against, and name the costs that a panel quote usually leaves out. If you know those, you can read any quote you are sent and tell whether it is complete.

Note: Every figure here is a range with its assumptions stated, not a quotation. LED pricing moves with panel supply, currency and freight. Use these to size a budget, then get current quotes before you commit to anything.

The Four Things That Set the Price

Before any numbers, understand what you are actually paying for. Four variables account for most of the difference between a cheap screen and an expensive one.

  1. Pixel pitch. The single biggest factor. Halving the pitch roughly quadruples the number of LEDs per square metre, and our experience is that going from P4 to P2.5 typically doubles or triples the price per square metre.
  2. Physical size. Price scales with area, but not perfectly, because the controller and spares are largely fixed costs whatever the size.
  3. Indoor or outdoor. Weatherproofing and high-brightness LEDs both carry real cost, so an outdoor-rated cabinet is meaningfully more expensive than its indoor equivalent at the same pitch.
  4. Rental or fixed-install. Rental cabinets carry engineering that fixed-install cabinets do not: fast locks, protected edges, integrated rigging, lower weight. You pay for that.

A Worked Example: A 6m x 3.4m P3.9 Events Screen

This is the most common size and pitch in UK events work, so it makes a useful anchor. Built from 500mm cabinets, a 6m x 3.375m screen is 12 cabinets wide by 6 tall, which is 72 cabinets and about 20 square metres.

That puts a complete, working, transportable system somewhere in the region of £35,000 to £60,000. The cabinets alone are around two-thirds of it, which is the ratio worth remembering.

Warning: If a quote for this screen comes in far below the cabinet range above, ask what is missing before you assume you have found a bargain. The usual answers are bare cabinets with no controller, no cases, no spares, or a lower LED bin grade that will show as patchiness within a couple of years.

How Pitch Moves the Number

The same physical screen at a different pitch is a different product at a different price. Rather than quote figures for pitches we do not buy regularly, here is the relationship in the terms that actually matter when you are budgeting.

  • Going finer roughly multiplies cost. Halving the pitch quadruples the LED count per square metre, and price follows steeply rather than linearly.
  • Going finer also costs more downstream. More pixels means more controller capacity, more output ports, and more data infrastructure behind the screen.
  • Going coarser saves money but only outdoors or at distance. A coarse pitch viewed too close looks pixellated, and no amount of saving fixes that.
Tip: Before comparing prices at two pitches, work out the minimum viewing distance for each. If the coarser pitch still suits your nearest viewer, the saving is real. If it does not, you are not comparing like with like.

What a Panel Quote Leaves Out

The quote you receive covers cabinets. The system you need covers more. These are the items that most often appear after the budget has been signed off.

  • Controller or sending card. Nothing displays without one, and it is quoted separately more often than not.
  • Cabling. Both data and power, cabinet to cabinet and back to source. Rarely quoted in full.
  • Rigging or ground support. Hanging bars, a stacking system, or a ground support frame. Rarely included.
  • Flight cases. Not needed for a permanent install, essential for anything that moves.
  • Spares. A dead module with no replacement is a dead screen, and lead times run to weeks.
  • Processing or scaling. Needed if your source resolution does not match the screen.
  • Installation and commissioning labour. Sometimes included, often not, and worth confirming in writing.

Buying Versus Hiring on Cost Alone

If you are weighing ownership against hire, the number that matters is not the purchase price, it is how many events a year you do. For the screen above, hire runs to roughly £3,600 per event, so ownership starts paying back somewhere around 12 to 18 months at 20 events a year, and takes five years or more at five events a year.

That is before the ongoing costs of ownership, which is where a lot of first-time buyers get caught out.

Why Prices Move

Three forces sit behind every LED price, and none of them are under your supplier's control:

  • Panel supply. LED manufacturing capacity and demand swing, and the market follows.
  • Exchange rates. Almost all panels are manufactured outside the UK, so sterling movements land directly in the price.
  • Freight. Shipping costs have been volatile, and screens are heavy and bulky.

This is why any published price, including everything on this page, is an anchor for budgeting rather than a number to plan against. Get current quotes, and treat a quote older than a few months as stale.

How to Use These Numbers

  1. Work out your pitch from the nearest viewing distance, and your size from the furthest.
  2. Take the per-square-metre range for your pitch and multiply by your area for a cabinet-only figure.
  3. Add a third to a half again for controller, cabling, cases, rigging and spares.
  4. Add the ongoing costs if you are buying rather than hiring.
  5. Get three quotes, and check each one against the list of what a panel quote leaves out.

That gives you a budget you can defend, and enough understanding to tell a complete quote from a partial one. Which is the real point: not knowing the price, but knowing whether the price you have been given covers a working screen.

How much does an LED screen cost per square metre?
For P3.9 rental cabinets, the pitch most commonly used for events in the UK, the figures we work with put cabinets at roughly £1,400 to £2,200 per square metre. That is cabinets only. Finer pitches cost substantially more per square metre and coarser outdoor pitches less, though outdoor construction adds cost back.
Why do two quotes for the same screen differ so much?
Usually because they are quoting different things. One may include the controller, cabling, cases and spares while the other quotes bare cabinets. Beyond that, LED bin quality, driver ICs, refresh rate and warranty terms all move the price without changing the headline size and pitch.
What percentage of the budget is the panels?
Assume the cabinets are somewhere between half and three-quarters of the real figure. The controller, cabling, rigging, flight cases, spares and any processing make up the rest, and they are the items most often missing from a first quote.
Is it cheaper to import directly from China?
Per panel, yes, often considerably. Once you add freight, duty, VAT, the cost of your own time managing it, and the risk of having no local support or spares when something fails, the gap narrows a lot. For a first purchase the saving rarely justifies the exposure.
