Why Trust This Guide

Written from real installs

Every procedure in the guide is one the author runs on live event and festival builds, not a rewrite of the manufacturer manuals.

Specific, not generic

Named hardware throughout: MCTRL300, MCTRL660, MCTRL R5, VX400, VX600, VX1000, NovaLCT, SmartLCT. Cable sizes, MCB ratings and port limits are actual numbers you can work from.

Read it before you buy

Every free tutorial on this site is written to the same standard as the guide. If they're useful to you, the guide will be too, and if they're not, don't buy it.

Written by

Alex Snelling, AV Technician & LED Specialist

I’ve spent years setting up LED screens and Novastar systems at live events, festivals, and corporate productions across the UK. I wrote this guide because when I started out, there was nothing like it, just fragmented forum posts and hard-to-follow manufacturer docs. This is the guide I wish I’d had on day one. More about me.

A Look Inside

130+ pages of clear, structured content, not a wall of text.

Chapter 7PDF Guide
Power Wiring

Cable sizing tables, MCB ratings, safe power-up sequence, earthing requirements and common wiring mistakes.

Chapter 9PDF Guide
NovaLCT Setup

Step-by-step config wizard walkthrough, screen mapping, brightness calibration and saving your configuration.

Chapter 11PDF Guide
Troubleshooting

Source-to-screen diagnostic method, fault lookup tables, and fixes for the 20 most common LED screen problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What format are the files?

You receive a ZIP bundle containing: a PDF (the main guide), an Excel .xlsx file (the calculator), and a Word .docx file (editable source). All open in standard apps on Windows and Mac.

Does this cover Novastar specifically?

Yes. The guide covers the full Novastar product ecosystem: MCTRL300, MCTRL660, MCTRL R5, VX400, VX600, VX1000, NovaLCT, SmartLCT, V-Can, and HOPE. Chapters 8 and 9 are dedicated entirely to Novastar hardware and software setup.

Does it work with LED panels from other brands?

Yes. The LED screen fundamentals (Chapters 1–7) apply to panels from any manufacturer, Unilumin, Absen, Leyard, and hundreds of others. Only the control system chapters are Novastar-specific.

I'm a complete beginner: is this too advanced?

No. This guide was written specifically for beginners with zero prior knowledge. Every term is explained the first time it appears, and the whole guide follows a "for dummies" approach without being condescending.

I'm not in the UK: does this still apply to me?

Mostly, yes: and here's the honest breakdown. LED screen fundamentals, pixel pitch, cabinets, data wiring, the entire Novastar hardware and NovaLCT sections, calibration, show-day operation and troubleshooting are all universal; they apply wherever you are. The exception is Chapter 7 (Power), which uses UK and EU conventions, 230V single phase, MCB ratings and BS 7671. The method and the load calculations still hold, but if you're in North America you'll need to map them onto NEC practice and your local voltages. The Excel calculator works in any region as long as you enter your own supply voltage.

Can I buy on my phone and download later?

Yes, and that's often the sensible thing to do. Buy whenever suits you: the download link is emailed to you and stays valid for 7 days, so you can pick the files up on a laptop when you're at a desk. The PDF reads fine on a phone or tablet, but the Excel calculator really wants a proper spreadsheet application.

How do I get the files after paying?

Two ways, so you can't lose them. The download button appears on screen the moment payment clears, and the same link is emailed to the address you check out with. The link stays active for 7 days, if you need it again after that, just reply to the email.

What's your refund policy?

If you're not satisfied within 30 days of purchase, email us and we'll refund you in full. No questions asked. Because this is a digital download delivered immediately, you consent at checkout to immediate delivery and waive the statutory 14-day cancellation right, our 30-day guarantee is a separate promise that's more generous than the legal minimum.
